Trip to Kaua`i 2 カウアイ島への小旅行2

We camped at our friend's backyard. We were planning to camp somewhere on beach, but he told us that beaches were not really safe lately, so he suggested us to camp on his yard. We also wanted to see him, so we decided to do so.

We woke up at 5:00 am(!) the next morning and started to drive to north. Loren woke me up as usual. Low blood pressure makes it difficult to wake up in the early morning for me. Although I was like a zombie, I helped Loren to put down the tent, and we quietly left our friend's place.

(Japanese) 結局のところ、カウアイ島に着いた日の夜はローレンの友達の家の裏庭でキャンプしました。本当はビーチなどでテントを張る予定でしたが、その友達曰く最近ビーチは浮浪者の方やドラッグ中毒の人たちが集まって危ないから「うちでテントを張りな」ということで、その友達の顔も見たかったことですし、お言葉に甘えてそうすることにしました。

翌日は朝の5時に起床（！）して北へ向かって早速走りだしました。いつものようにローレンに起こされました。低血圧な私は朝が苦手なのです。ゾンビみたいだったけど、それでもテキパキとテントをしまうのを手伝って、静かに友達の家を出たのでした。


I got a cup of Chai Latte, and Loren got a cup of coffee on the way. I love Chai. I saw the ocean on my right hand side and mountains on my left. It really feels great to wake up early because the air is fresh and clear. I am going to try to change my constitution, so that I can wake up more easily!

(Japanese) 途中、私はチャイラッテ、ローレンはコーヒーを買いました。チャイが大好き。右手に海、左手に山を見てのドライブです。朝早く起きるのは本当に気持ちいい。朝の空気は透き通るから。もっと早く起きることが苦にならない体質になるようにがんばるぞ。


This is Hanalei Valley. As the valley approaches the ocean, it becomes more like a plain. The river on the very right side of the picture is Hanalei River. All the rain rained on mountains of Kauai make rivers and run into the ocean.

(Japanese) これはハナレイ渓谷（海に近づくにつれて平野になっているが）を高台から眺めた写真。写真の一番右を流れているのがハナレイ川で、カウアイ島の中心に位置する山々に降り注いだ雨が渓谷を辿り、川となり海に流れ込んでいます。


What you see in these photos are taro patches. Hawaiian people irrigated these taro patches from the river. They were very smart. Taro is a sacred plant for Hawaiian people, sort of like rice for Japanese people.

(Japanese)　写真一面に見えるのは田んぼではなく、タロパッチ。（タロは日本で言えば、サトイモの大きいタイプって感じです。）昔のハワイの原住民の人たちが川から水を引いて、これだけのタロパッチを作り、タロを育てる技術を生み出しました。とても賢かったのです。タロはハワイの人にとっては神聖な食べ物です。日本人にとってお米のようなものです。


Loren said, "A king or a chief must be happy when he found this area. He thought he could make all these talo patches and feed people." I agree.

(Japanese) ローレンが「昔の王様や村の首長はこの平野を見つけたとき、嬉しかっただろうね。これだけのタロパッチを作って民を養うことが出来るもんね」と言っていました。「そうだね。」と答えました。


In the very greenish views, I found a cute, green church.
