Last Sunday was Easter.
I did not know about Easter until I came to Maui.
I learned that it is the most important day for Christian people. It was the day Jesus resurrected after his death by crucifixion. My understanding of it is that his resurrection symbolizes the power of faith and love of God that Jesus wanted people to witness. I am not particularly a Christian, and I do not follow one particular religion; however, I respect all the religions exist in this world. I love learning what each religion has been teaching people and learning how people have been practicing their religious practices.
I remember that I found a book written about different religions in the world at a school library when I was about a 9th grader. I was so fascinated with the book and borrowed it and read it through again and again; I took notes what I liked about each religion and decided to follow those teachings in addition to my own belief system that I had formed since I was young.
When I think of Easter, eggs always come to my mind. "Easter eggs are a widely popular symbol of new life" according to Wikipedia.
In the morning of Easter, Loren and I found two set of eggs laid on the ground and under a tree. It was a special surprise to us on Easter morning! We did not see a mother chicken around the eggs, but later, we saw a mother chicken sitting on the eggs. She has been sitting on them for the past three days and she is right next to my house. Every morning, I check to see if she is still there. She has been sitting on them patiently. I am hoping that neighbor's dog won't bother her.
Lately, a lot of my friends have been pregnant (I counted, and there were 11!) and some of them have already given birth. I have a privilege to meet these new lives, and here is one more mother-to-be in my neighborhood!
There will be a lot of chicks waddling around soon...

この前の日曜日はイースター（復活祭）という祝日でした。
イースターについてはマウイに来るまで知りませんでした。イースターはキリスト教徒の人にとって一番大切な日であるそうです。イースターの日がジーザス（キリスト）が十字架にかけられて亡くなった後に甦った日と言われています。きっとジーザスの甦りは、彼が人々に見てもらいたかった、信じることの力と神の愛を象徴しているのだと思います。私はキリスト教徒というわけではありません。ある特定の宗教を崇拝してもいません。でも、この世に存在する全ての宗教を尊重します。それぞれの宗教が世紀を超えて人々に何を伝えてきたのか、そして人々はどのようにそれを理解し生活の中に取り入れてきたのか学ぶのが好きです。高校一年生ぐらいの頃、学校の図書室でたまたま「世界の宗教」という本を見つけました。何故かとても魅かれて、借りて家に持って帰り、何度も読みました。それから一つ一つの宗教の好きな部分を書き出しました。それらと小さい頃から形成していた独自の信念を練習していくことに決めました。
イースターと聞くといつも卵を思い浮かべます。ウィキペディアによりますと「イースター・エッグは、スラブ諸国の民間伝承では新しい命のシンボルとして広く一般化している」そうです。
先週の日曜日の朝、ローレンと私は庭の一角と木の根元に産み落とされた鶏の卵を見つけました。初めてのことです。イースターの朝に何というサプライズ（驚き）でしょう。そのときはお母さん鶏を見かけませんでしたが後から見てみたら、お母さん鶏が卵に座っていました。（私の家のすぐ横の木の下に。）お母さん鶏が座りだしてからもう三日になります。毎朝、まだいるかな？ってそーっと見ています。忍耐強くずっと座っています。近所の犬が邪魔をしなければいいなと思っています。
この頃、お友達に出産ラッシュが続いています。（数えてみたら11人ものお友達が妊娠中でした！）そのうちの何人かは既に赤ちゃんを産みました。新しい命たちに出会える機会を頂いてありがたい日々です。そんな中、ご近所さんにもお母さんになろうとしている方（鶏）が！
もうすぐしたら、ひよこたちがピョコピョコ歩いていると思います。
