What does Loren do? Some people asked me.
He is a social worker. He has MSW (Masters in Social Work) and has been working in the field for almost 8 to 9 years. After he came to Maui, he created Maui Hero Project (MHP) which is an Adventure Therapy, Rite of Passage program for intermediate kids who are or might be struggling with substance abuse or at-risk. The program also functions as a prevention program. It collaborates with intermediate schools on Maui, and the base of MHP is Aloha House.
His web-site summarizes what his program is about. "The Maui Hero Project believes that everyone has a hero within. By re-tracing the adventures of Maui, participants come to see their lives as a story full of different characters, plots, settings and lessons. They come to see themselves as the hero or heroin in their own journeys. They learn to make healthy decisions and develop the skills they need to create a positive ending of their own story.
The mission of the Maui Hero Project is to create a positive peer culture of youth who have developed a heroic value system through mental and physical adventured based on the legendary tales of the Hawaiian hero Maui."
Counselors takes kids to different adventures on Maui after school for 8 weeks as a cycle and try to understand what the kids are going through, be there for them, help them to develop a good self-esteem, and help them to see the world differently with more meaning and love. (There is a movie clip on his web-site. If you double click it, it will start.) Of course, it does not happen as easily as it can be written. The more you know how stern life these young kids (12-15) are already going through, and each time your hand is waved aside as you try to reach them, it hurts our hearts, and it is a draining occupation. There was a period of time when Loren's spirit was sunken or has been completely burned down. But, his hope is fired again.
I have helped his program only a couple of occasions, but from that limited time of interacting with kids and seeing how he works with them, I can see how important job he is doing for the future generation.
The past couple of weeks, Loren was writing a grant proposal for his new idea which will be new future of Maui Hero Project. I cannot write much about it at this point, but the idea is very moving, exciting, and inspirational. I was helping him on that journey by making graphs from surveys, typing, formatting his grant proposal, and mainly doing some computer stuff. We worked from the early morning to late night. It was a pretty brutal week; we did not get much rest, but we were excited on this new possibility; our passion kept us going. I hope that he will get the grant, so that many kids will benefit from it.
Now, I am catching up school which I sort of put aside for the past 5 days. Loren inspires me often. He makes things happen that don't seem to happen. His ability to write grants and the power of going after his dream will help me when I write a grant for my school someday in the future.

ローレンは何をする人ですか？何人かの人に聞かれました。
彼はソーシャルワーカーです。社会福祉事業の修士号を持っています。福祉の世界で働いてもう８,９年くらい経つんじゃないでしょうか。マウイに来てから、「マウイヒーロープロジェクト」という、中学生の子ども達を対象としたアドベンチャーセラピープログラムを創りました。主にドラッグ（麻薬など）、アルコール、タバコを常用している子ども達の回復を目的としたプログラムですが、まだ使っていない子ども達をそれらから守るための予防プログラムとしても使われています。マウイのいくつかの中学校と連携しており、マウイヒーロープロジェクトの親分（ベース）はアロハハウスという非営利団体です。
彼のウェブサイトがプログラムについてまとめています。「マウイヒーロープロジェクト（以下MHP）は皆、一人一人の中に「ヒーロー」がいると信じています。マウイ（ハワイの伝説には、マウイという半神半人の英雄が存在します。マウイ島は彼の名前が付けられた島なのです。）が経験した冒険を実際に体験してみることで、子ども達は、自分たちの人生に色々な登場人物、筋書き、背景や学びが含まれていることを理解し始めます。そして自分の人生（物語）では自分がヒーロー、もしくはヒロインであることを認識し、健全な決断を出来るようになり、そして彼らの物語の最期がポジティブであるように導けるようになります。
MHPの使命は建設的な若い子ども達のカルチャーを作ることです。その子ども達はハワイに残されたマウイの伝説にのっとった、精神的であり身体的な冒険を通して、高潔で勇敢な価値観を築きあげます。」
ローレンを含めたカウンセラー（スタッフ）達は、８週間を１サイクルとして学校が終わった後に子ども達をマウイ島に数あるアドベンチャースポットに連れていきます。そして、子ども達が何に悩んでいるのか、どんなことが彼らの人生に起こっているのか理解し、彼らの助けとなり、自信をつける手伝いをし、この世界には意味と愛があるのだということを感じられるよう手伝います。（MHPのウェブサイトにビデオがあります。ダブルクリックしてもらうと観れるようになっています。）勿論、言葉で書くほど簡単ではなく、まだ若い中学生の子ども達（12-15歳）が既にどれだけ大変な人生を送っているのかを知れば知るほど、また、どんなに彼らに手を差し伸べようとしてもその手を払いのけられる度に、辛くもなる職業です。ローレンも一時期「もうダメだぁ」と意気消沈と言いましょうか、完全燃焼している時期がありました。でも、彼の情熱にまた火が付けられました。
数回だけ手伝わせてもらったことがありますが、その短い子ども達と接することの出来た時間と、どのようにローレンが子ども達を指導しているのか見て、未来の世代のために彼がとても大切な仕事をしているのだなぁと思いました。
この数週間、ローレンはプログラムを回すために必要な（NPOなので、利益は入ってこない。子ども達は無料でこのプログラムを受けられるようになっている）補助金に申請するために、寝ても覚めても案を書きだす作業に没頭しておりました。彼には新しい閃き（ひらめき）があり、それがMHPの新しい未来です。具体的には今の時点では書けませんが、とても感動的でワクワクして、鼓舞されるようなアイディアです。私は彼の調査の結果をグラフにしたり、タイピングしたり、申込書の書類の体裁を整えたり、主にコンピューター関係の作業を手伝っていました。朝早くから、夜遅くまで一週間ほど作業していましたので、結構体力的に辛い一週間でした。でも私達はこの新しい可能性に魅了し、鼓舞されたために、やりきることが出来ました！彼のプログラムがこの補助金をもらえるといいです。それによって助けられる子ども達が沢山いることでしょう。
ということで過去５日ほど横に置いていた（無視していた）大学の課題に今週末は追いつこうとしているところです。ローレンにはよく励まされます。彼には「えっちょっとそれは無理でしょ」って思うようなことを実現してしまうところがあります。彼の補助金申請する能力（彼はこれを長年している。国や州からお金をもらって彼のプログラムを回しているので、お金をもらわないことには彼も食べていけないので必死）と彼の夢を追い続けるパッション（情熱）は、いつか将来私が自分の学校を持つために補助金申請をするときに、大きな励ましとなってくれることでしょう。
