My Friend K in Kyoto 京都の友達K

After I saw Ayumi at JR Osaka station, I went to see my friend K in Kyoto.
I did not know that Kyoto was not really far from Osaka. It took only 30 minutes to get there.

I met K about 5 or 6 years ago on Maui. She is the one who taught how to live on Maui to me who did not know which was left and right. She took me to a bank to open a bank account, she helped me taking a driver's license, and she showed me how to get a car insurance. I could not speak or read English back then, so her help was tremendous. I don't know how else I could start a smooth start on Maui. It is not exaggerating to say that she helped me to build the foundation to live on Maui. We also lived together for about 3 months, and she was a good cook, making meals for me sometimes. One night, she baked an apple pie for me to celebrate my performance at school. We talked a lot, too. Her kind heart and sense of humor originated in Kansai, Japan nurtured me. I am so appreciative to have such a great friend like her.


K picked me up at JR Kyoto station, and then she took me to her nephew’s place. He is still very young but has been bravely dealing with a serious illness. The last time I saw him was before he was diagnosed. He is back in school now, and things are settling down. I was praying his health from Maui, so I was happy when I saw his smile. His little sister is grown up! She just turned 4, but she acts like 7. Her wit makes our mouths open and laugh. She must have been through a lot supporting her brother. Learning how much struggle he, his family, and K went through last year made me appreciate all of our lives even more. Life takes turns sometimes without expectations, but we never know where we reach when we come out of the turns. There are always beautiful things waiting for us...

After that, K took me to a natural food restaurant called Village. It was the first meal I had in Japan and was yummy. My tongue and body knew I was back in Japan.

あゆみちゃんと大阪駅で会ってから、友達Kに会いに京都へ移動。
京都があんなに大阪から近いって知らなかったよ。30分もあれば着いちゃいました。

Kとはマウイで5,6年前に出会いました。マウイでまだ右も左も分からない私に色々教えてくれた方。銀行口座を開けるのに連れて行ってくれて英語がまだ何も分からない私のために色々手伝ってくれたり、車の免許を取るのにも多大なサポートをしてくれたし、取れたら取れたで車の保険に入るために連れて行ってくれたり、本当にKがいなかったら私のマウイ生活はあんなにスムーズなスタートを切っていなかったと思う。私のマウイライフの土台を作ってくれたのはKだと言っても決して過言ではない。3ヶ月ほどだけど一緒に住んだこともあるし、料理が上手でご飯を作ってくれたり、私が学校の発表会で上手くいった日の夜にはお祝いにアップルパイを焼いてくれたり、一緒に色々な話をしたり、本当にKの優しさや関西のお笑いペースに私は育まれていました。こんなにステキな友達と付き合いがあることを私は心から感謝です。本当に一期一会ですね。


京都駅まで迎えに来てくれて、それからKの甥っ子さんに会いに。彼はまだ小さいのだけど、深刻な病気と勇敢に立ち向かっています。この前会ったときはまだ発病する前のことでした。今は小学校にも通えていて、安定してきたところだそうです。マウイからいつも彼が元気でいるように祈っていました。だから笑顔が見れてとても嬉しかった！
彼の妹さんも大分大きくなっていてビックリ。4歳になったばかりなのに、7歳に見違うほどのしっかりさ。彼女の頭の回転の速さは大人の私達の口をあんぐり開けて笑わしてくれます。でもちっちゃな体でお兄ちゃんを支えていくで沢山のことを経験したんだろうね。どれだけ、Kの甥っ子、彼の家族、そしてKが過去一年ちょっとの間がんばってきたのか、その話を聞いていると今与えられている皆の生を感謝せずにはおれません。人生にはよく思いもよらない変動があります。でもその変動から出てくるときに何が見えるかはわかりません。でもいつも何か美しいものがそこに待ってくれています。

その後、Kがナチュラルフードレストランのvillageというレストランに連れて行ってくれました。日本に帰ってきてから最初のご飯はとてもおいしかったなり！私の舌と体は日本に帰ってきたことを察知したようでした。
