Recycling Center リサイクル

ハ ワイ州は「HI5（ハイ　ファイブ）」というシステムを昨年取り入れました。缶やペットボトル、そしてビンなどをリサイクルセンターに持っていくと、一 つのアイテムを５セントと交換してくれるのです。マウイ島には１２箇所のリサイクルセンターがあり、それぞれの町にあるので仕事の帰りなどに寄って行けま す。水曜日から日曜日まで朝８時から夕方５時まで開いています。どんな形や大きさの缶、ペットボトル、ビンでも良いわけではなく、規定されたものだけ受け 付けてくれます。規定外のものは、備え付けられている大きな緑の鉄の箱に投げ入れます。私がアメリカに来て一番ショックだったことの一つに、こちらではご みを分別しないということでした。生ごみも、燃えるごみも燃えないごみも、乾電池も、何もかも一緒に一つのゴミ袋に入れるのです。そして、週に一回マウイ 郡の運営するごみ収集車が集めに来ます。各家庭が、家の前にごみを置いておくシステムになっています。日本のように、どこかに集めて置きません。

あ のごみ達が果たしてどこに行くのかが私の長年の謎でした。何故ならマウイには大きなごみ焼却炉など無いのです。その謎の答えはどうやら、マウイの中心地 にあるごみ埋め立て地に行くようです。私はマウイの美しい自然を見ながら、果たしてマウイがどこまで私たちのごみを飲み込んでくれるのか、胸のうち でひやひやしております。

私はこの リサイクルセンターをHI５が始まる前から利用していたのですが、昨年このHI５制度が始まってから、さらに意欲的にリサイクルをしております。昨年９月 にHI５を始めて、今現在＄４８．３０貯まったのです！もう少しで＄５０（４，５００円くらい）。このお金を何に使おうか考え中です。一回に持っていくに付き、大 体２ドル前後もらえます。一度は＄１３．９０というときもあったのだ。塵も貯まれば山となるってね。

Last year, State of Hawai'i adopted a system called "HI 5." You bring empty cans, glasses, and/or plastic containers, and you will get 5 cents for each item. There are totally twelve recycle centers on Maui, and each town has one, so I usually go by on the way to work or home. They are open from 8 am to 5 pm from Wednesday to Sunday.

Not every cans, glasses, and plastic containers are accpeted; there are certain types of them. Other items need to be thrown in a big, green, iron boxes. Oen of things that surprised me when I first came to U.S. was that every kind of garbage were mixed in a bag and was thrown away. In Japan, we separate from flamable garbate to non-flamable ones, and there are detailed rules to throw your garbage.

I had wondered for a long time where all the garbage went because there is no single incinerator on Maui. The answer was that they seemed to go to a reclaimed ground in the center of Maui. As I see the beautiful nature of Maui, I am concered how much more garbage Maui will be able to swallow.

I was using the recycling centers before the HI 5 started, but now, I am even more motivated to do since I made $48.30 since I started in September 2004. I usually make about 2 dollars each time, but once I made $13.90! "Many a little makes a mickle" you know. I am thinking for what I should use this money. Maybe I will keep depositing it... :)
