Jaws ジョーズ

On Sunday, Loren and I went to see the Jaws on the north shore of Maui. I did not see any surfers out, but this morning (Tuesday)'s newspaper had a picture of a surfer surfing the Jaws on Monday.
"Every winter, when the huge Northwest swells roll into Maui's North Shore, they create the world's largest ridable waves at a break called 'Jaws'. It is named for its huge gaping barrels. The waves here are so enormous that they're impossible to paddle into - the fastest paddlers can't generate enough speed to make their way down the wave's face. This problem has been solved by using Jet Skis to pull the surfer into the waves. Once the surfer has caught the wave, he releases the tow handle, and the fun begins! I was just mesmerized with the hugeness of the waves that is almost impossible to capture the idea with my cognitive capacity.

日 曜日に、ローレンとマウイの北側の海に「ジョーズ」を見に行きました。その日はジョーズに乗っているサーファー達は見ませんでしたが、今朝の新聞の一面 に、昨日ジョーズに乗ったサーファーの写真が載っていました。ジョー ズといってもサメではなく、年間平均12回ほど発生する高 さ20mにもなるモンスター波のこ とです。日本の沿岸で発生する強力な大平洋低気圧のうねりが、時速80km、約48時間かけて3,800kmも離れたマウイ島北海岸の岩礁で巨大化した 波の怪物となるそうです。ジョーズはサーフボードの上に乗って腕でこいで出ていくには大き過ぎです。ではどうやって沖へ出ていくかというと、ジェットス キーに乗って出ていくのです。一人ではなくて、最低ペアで。そしてサーファーが波に乗ったら、パートナーがジェットスキーで追いかけていき、サーファーが 波に乗り終わった時に拾い上げます。

私はただただ、認識仕切れない「大きさ」に魅了されて、しばらくボーっと見ておりました。
