Perfection Collaboration Project

I was given a privilege to be part of a wonderful project called “Maui’s Perfection Collaboration Project.” It is organized by a man named Hai Dai in partnership with Tashi Pendey Foundation and Other Friday (internationally recognized youth’s new media program). His vision is to collaborate with artists on Maui to create a film that encourages people to express themselves and to supports children and Tibetans in refuge.

On his web-site, he states, “Many thanks for your support in joining us in helping children and Tibetans in refuge in the preservations of our human rights and to help preserve for posterity "our rites of passage" with our freedom of expressions! Whether you are a performance artists, musician, artists and alike and feel that you have a creative expression that you would like to add to our ‘Perfection Gallery’ to share with the Tibetan children in refuge and the world abroad our presentation of the 10 perfections via our creative expressions.”

The ten perfections are:
1. Generosity, giving (dana)
2. Morality (sila)
3. Renunciation (nekkhamma)
4. Wisdom (panna)
5. Energy (viriya)
6. Patience (khanti)
7. Truthfulness (sacca)
8. Determination (adhitthana)
9. Loving-kindness (metta)
10. Equanimity (upekkha)

Yesterday, Hai Dai filmed Izanai Yosakoi dance. I wish I could have danced with other Izanai dancers, but the Japanese dancers were not here, and there was no time to contact few Maui dancers since it sort of came up at the last minute, so I danced alone but with everybody in my heart. I told Hai Dai that the Izanai Yosakoi would be closest to perfections of Joy and Energy, so he suggested that it is Joyous Effort.

The film will be digitally exhibited at the Tashi Pendey Reception with HH (His Holiness) 14th Dalai Lama on April 25th at 8:30 AM (Maui Time) via live webcasting on the Internet at TashiPendey.com. Also, there will be an event and showcase at Kihei Charter School on May 6th. The fundraiser proceeds will be passed on to Tashi Pendey Foundation.

If you have time, please tune into this website at 8:30 am on Wednesday, April 25th and come to the event on May 6th.

The link below will show you what different schools did.

Tired...

(Students playing a baseball in a P.E. class. The pitcher used to be a students this elementary school. Now, he is a high school student and plays baseball. This day, he was helping his old teacher's class.)

I am tired...
The weekend UH course had a lot of fun and learning. Several assignments successfully made their due dates. Our presentations went well.

But, oh boy! how tired I was. Without much rest, Monday morning, I had to go to the elementary school for student teaching. I respect all the teachers who wake up early every morning (my mentor teacher is in her classroom at 6:15 am!)

The next week will be my last week to work with the students.
I will miss them.

Tonight, I was so eager to go to bed early and sleep, but for some reason, I cannot sleep. It sometimes happens that I cannot sleep because I am too tired. I never had the trouble before. Does it mean that I am getting old?? Or it could mean that I am not doing a good job of swtiching on and off from "work mode" to "relax mode."

Oh well. I will try to rest myself.

(Students playing Jenga)

(Other students playing Uno)

The Showdown of Semester

This semester is almost over!
This week was busy, and the next week will be busy with final exams and assignments to submit.

This weekend, I have the weekend UH (University of Hawaii) course (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...).

No weekend for me :(
Well, I am happy to learn knowledge and skills to be a good teacher, so I don't have complains.

The above photo is my desk. How messy it is...!
I want to clean and organize my place next week if I can find the time.

Hope you will have a wonderful weekend!

Dying is Living Through

While a lot of new lives have arrived and have been expected, there is a life that has been preparing to leave this world.

Both are beautiful, birth and death.

I don't know when the soul will decide to leave the body.
I just feel it is coming.

She is so beautiful.
She is a real heroin in her own life. She went through a lot. Despite of all the hardships, she remained charming and loving.

I can already tell that I will probably burst into tears when it finally takes place even though I have been preparing for it for a long time.
She has been hoping that it won't be too long before she goes.
If there is some sort of trick that decides her time, I wonder what that would be. Is there anything she still needs to experience in this life time? "What is the true meaning in this whole thing?" I ask myself a lot.

I want her to be freed from her pain, but on the other hand, I want her to stay. I want to share all the beautiful things I will find in this world, and I know that she will make an exaggerated face and voice like she always does, "Oh boy!" as if she saw it for the first time (to make me feel proud like a small child).

The creator, I know you know the best way to bring peace to her. If there is anything I can help, please let me know.

I love her from the bottom of my heart.

---------------------------------(Japanese)--------------------------

Water Lily

Beauiful, fresh water lilies were smiling at me by the entrance door when I came home one day.

It must have done by him...
We have not really had time to "see" each other for the past months although we talk everyday on the phone or in person. Most of the talk we have are related to work. We have been working from the moment we wake up to the minute before we go to bed. I think there could be times like that in life.

Yet, the water lilies were his cute gesture showing me how he cares about me.

Thank you, ne.

Spring Brings New Lives

Last Sunday was Easter.

I did not know about Easter until I came to Maui.
I learned that it is the most important day for Christian people. It was the day Jesus resurrected after his death by crucifixion. My understanding of it is that his resurrection symbolizes the power of faith and love of God that Jesus wanted people to witness. I am not particularly a Christian, and I do not follow one particular religion; however, I respect all the religions exist in this world. I love learning what each religion has been teaching people and learning how people have been practicing their religious practices.

I remember that I found a book written about different religions in the world at a school library when I was about a 9th grader. I was so fascinated with the book and borrowed it and read it through again and again; I took notes what I liked about each religion and decided to follow those teachings in addition to my own belief system that I had formed since I was young.

When I think of Easter, eggs always come to my mind. "Easter eggs are a widely popular symbol of new life" according to Wikipedia.

In the morning of Easter, Loren and I found two set of eggs laid on the ground and under a tree. It was a special surprise to us on Easter morning! We did not see a mother chicken around the eggs, but later, we saw a mother chicken sitting on the eggs. She has been sitting on them for the past three days and she is right next to my house. Every morning, I check to see if she is still there. She has been sitting on them patiently. I am hoping that neighbor's dog won't bother her.

Lately, a lot of my friends have been pregnant (I counted, and there were 11!) and some of them have already given birth. I have a privilege to meet these new lives, and here is one more mother-to-be in my neighborhood!

There will be a lot of chicks waddling around soon...

A New Kettle

This late afternoon, I went to Mana Foods in Paia, my favorite place to do a grocery shopping.

Then, I found this kettle. Because it got a scar on the lid, it was 50% off! It was only $9. I did not own one since I came to Maui (although it's been 5 years), so I was kind of thinking to buy one eventually, but I could boil water by using a pan. A kettle was not super necessary, and I wanted to keep my belongings to minimum, so I was not seriously looking for one.

Well, today, it came to me. It was placed where I usually do not look at, and this kettle was sitting there alone. I liked its simplicity and color, so I decided to get it for myself as a gift :)

---------------------------(Japanese)-----------------------------

Baby and Organic Cotton

Last week, I visited my friend who just gave birth to a baby boy.

It was my first time to meet the baby. Baby is only 6 weeks old. He was sleeping the whole time I was visiting them (about two hours). He woke a couple of times and had mom's milk.

When he was sleeping in my friend's arms, she asked me if I wanted to hold him. I was delighted to get to do that. I love holding babies because they are soft, sweet, and smell good; they give me a peaceful feeling. I feel awkward to ask moms if I could hold their babies if the babies are still young (like just born) because I think that some moms are nervous to let other people hold their babies. I think it's natural to be that way. The baby was in their bodies only a short while ago, and they are protective like when a mom cat gives birth to her kittens.

My friend gently passed him to me, and I held him, and after like a minute, he moved his body, stretched, opened his eyes once and looked at me. I think he thought, "Oh, who is that? She is not my mom." Then, he begun to cry. I gave him back to his mom, and he stopped crying. Well, that's a good sign that they are developing a strong relationship.

It is so amazing to me that human beings have the ability to create a new life and a mother nurtures it in her body and bring it out to this world. What a mystery! the picture above is the baby boy's feet. So cute.

As I was looking for a gift for them, I came across with a company in Canada called, Baby Naturopathics Inc. According to their web-site, "Baby NaturopathicsTM was founded on the ideals of Kimberley Dare, ND, a registered Naturopathic Doctor and mother of three young children. With the help and support of her family, Dr. Dare was able to fulfill a long-held dream: the creation of a progressive and environmentally conscious company that promotes natural and healthful products for infants and kids."

I have already placed orders twice with this company, and they have great customer services. When they sent me what I ordered, they attached a hand written note, stating, "Thank you, Akari for shopping with us." This subtle effort makes a big difference on impression of the company. I was also more satisfied with their products than I expected to be. I love the color of this green, and I think that this color is fine for both boys and girls although I think it's fine if a girl is wearing blue, and a boy is wearing red.

This is a Japanese company called, "The Harvest Plus." It also sells products that are made with organic cotton. I ordered a underclothing for my mother at their web-site as her birthday gift. She told me that she really enjoys wearing it. It's light, comfortable, but keeps her warm in the cold winter season of Japan. Harvest Plus also has a great customer care. I have been contacting with Mrs. Takahashi who is a partner of the store owner. She was easy to talk to and was always willing to listen to my requests. I appreciate their effort to have this company. I am planning to order some gift when my friend in Japan is going to give birth to her third baby in September.

Harvest Plus accepted my feedback and put it on here.

Why am I particular about organically grown cotton? I do not have scientific knowledge, but what I learned is that cotton is one of the farm plants that need a lot of agricultural chemicals to grow. Where do they go? They got to penetrate into the land, the air, rivers, and the ocean. In the long run, they will eventually come back to us. (If you are interested, please refer to the site below.)

Probably, having caring customer care naturally comes to companies that are sensitive towards the environment. Obviously, babies who just arrived on this planet but also grown-up ones can be happy when we are held in something comfortable to our skin and to our earth. It has gentle energy.
