Friday, 9/1

This year, we bought a floor ticket for each three night! Last year, we only bought general admission tickets, and on the last day, we bumped into a ticket seller who sold us floor tickets. The floor seats were definitely better than grass seats. The sound was better, people were better, and the experience was much, much better. So, we saved up our money for this once-a-year event which is like a pilgrimage to us.

Still today, I could feel the excitement that I had in my heart right before Dave Matthews Band came out on the stage. It's a feeling of festival that is positively provoking joy out of my chest.

The night started with "Everyday" which is also one of my favorite songs.

(Columbia River is right behind the stage. You can see DMB and this view at the same time! How great is that?)

Finally, here we are! Dave Matthews Band's show at Gorge!!!! The first night!

We left Mount Rainier National Park for George, Washington. As we drove to the east, the view changed. Green trees started to disappear, and the air gets warmer. We entered the desert area.

George(ジョージ)という市にある Gorge Amphitheatre(ゴージ野外コンサート会場)でショーが催されるのです!

We arrived in George around noon. We got food, ice, and water and secured a place to sleep. Last year, we slept at Gorge camp site, but we wanted to sleep at a little more quiet place this year. We found this beautiful spot last year where it's right next to Columbus River. We put up our tent there and went to the Gorge Amphitheater.

(8) 8/31 Mount Rainier

Thursday, 8/31 (still 8/31...)

After we hiked all day, we went to a small town just outside of Mount Rainier National Park to call Grandma and check our cell phone messages. At a small general store, we used a public phone and called Grandma. She was doing well. Loren also called his sister and brother-in-law to ask how the funeral went. It went well, too. We checked our cell phone messages. No emergency. Good.

After that, we found a small market place where we could take a shower. In the market place, there was an artificially made big rock for rock climbing practice. I have never done it before, but I would like to try someday. Loren showed me how to, and I climbed like a monkey, but when I tried a side with an inclination of 30 or 40 degrees, I could not climb up to the top. I was stuck... I could not neither come down nor go up.... I finally jumped off, though.

After we took a shower, we were going back to our camp site to cook our dinner, but we found this cute restaurant on the way back. We decided to have a dinner there. The restaurant also runs an inn. They had cute log houses. I would love to live in one of these houses! And our dinner was so wonderful!! If you ever go to Mount Rainier, you should check them out.

(7) 8/31 Mount Rainier

Thursday, 8/31 (still 8/31)

After the first hike, we had a lunch by the Reflection Lake. The lake was literally reflecting the mount rainier. I did not look into the lake's surface, but if I did, I might have seen something that reflected on me...??

After our yummy lunch, we went to the next hiking spot, Narada Falls. It was a big water fall, and we saw a rainbow on the water fall. Can you see it? We hiked down towards the Paradise camping site from there.

Then, we found a bush of wild raspberries. I picked one and ate it. It was a bit sour but was sweet over all. We also found blueberries there. I wanted to eat all of them as a berry lover, but Loren told me that eating too much wile berries is not a good idea.

We took about an hour of nap there, too.

(6) 8/31 Mount Rainier

Thursday, 8/31

It was rainy yesterday, and we were a bit anxious to see the next day's weather. Loren always wakes up before I do. This morning, he made a morning fire, using the charcoals from last night and made a cup of miso soup for me. He woke me up by calling me, "Little monkeee! It's time to wake up!!" as usual. (Loren often calls me "Little Monke." It's his way of expressing his affection towards me, and I like to be called like that.)
I came out of the tent and saw the blue sky! Yes! It was sunny! Thank you, nature.

After breakfast, we went to different hiking spots and enjoyed hiking short trails. Originally, we planned to do a backpacking this year in Mount Rainier, but my foot did not recover well enough for this time. Oh well, next time.

(5) 8/30 Mount Rainier

Finally, we got everything we needed. We were ready to begin our journey in Washington 2006!

Last year, we went around the Olympic Peninsula, but we did not have enough time to enjoy Mount Rainier. So, this year, we decided it as one of main destinations. It was not too far from Seattle to get to Mount Rainier National Park.

As soon as we drove into the mountain, our cell phones lost connection. We felt like we were really on a vacation :)
I did not realize how cold it could get. It was cloudy and even a little rainy when we got there. I was so happy that I bought the green windbreaker at REI... Yet, it was still very, very cold!! My body and mind were in shock since they had not encountered such a cold climate for a long time.

First, we went to the Cougar Rock and registered for a camp site. The camp ranger told us that the lot 21 was the best, so we reserved it for two days. We bought firewood and sat up the tent before the sun sat. Then, we went to Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center to just check it out. It was 5400 ft. high. Wind was blowing hard and made me anxious to sleep in the tent.

As soon as we returned to our camp site, I started to cook, and Loren made fire and started to blow our air mattress with his mouth and lungs!! We bought an electric air pump at REI, but it had to be charged for 12 hours before the first use. I told Loren that we could sleep on it without inflating it, but he told me that it would get really cold from the ground, and air mattress would keep us distanced from the ground. It was a big air mattress, and he took about 20 - 30 minutes to blow it up. Later, he told me, "I almost saw light when I was blowing..." (meaning he was experiencing shortage of oxygen).

After dinner, Loren and I sat by the fire and just watched it.
It was very quiet. Nobody else was around us (because it was Wednesday night).
Our cell phones were out of reach.
No TV (we don't watch even at home, though), no homework, no business to take care of, no time pressure... no stress.
As hot soup slowly warmed up inside of me, it brought a peaceful feeling to me. It's been awhile I felt like that. The moment itself was worth while to have the trip.

I even felt appreciation towards the cold air outside of my body. Without it, I would not have felt the calming feeling as clearly as I did. This relativity reminded me the relationship between me and the Universe (or God or whatever you feel comfortable to call it). I believe that we are all from there, but we intentionally forgot the fact that we are part of the Universe in order to experience it. Without knowing what warm is, I would not know what cold is. It is also written in a book called "Conversations with God" written by Neale Donald Walsch. In the book, God says, "Taken to ultimate logic, you cannot experience yourself as what you are until you've encountered what you are not. This is the purpose of the theory of relativity, and all physical life. It is by that which you are not that you yourself as defined. Now in the case of the ultimate knowing - in the case of knowing yourself as the Creator - you cannot experience your Self as creator unless and until you create. And you cannot create yourself until you un-create yourself. In a sense, you have to first "not be" in order to be."

I really enjoyed watching the fire place. I saw stories in it. Especially, I enjoyed after all the wood were burned out. They became charcoals. They made the most precious song I had ever heard. It was so cute and beautiful. Although I was very tired earlier (falling asleep at REI), I stayed up pretty late because I was mesmerized by the fire.

Eventually, we went to bed (sleeping bags) around 11 pm.

After the Pike Place Market, we went to REI - Seattle Flagship. It is a huge outdoor sports supply store! It is like an amusement park for outdoor lovers.

Loren and I bought some camping gears there. (We borought most of equipments from Maui.)

Loren was so hyper since he did not sleep much. On the other hand, I was so spacey because I did not sleep much. While Loren was running around, getting what we needed, I was giving up... I had to sit down for a while.

I bought the green windbreaker I am wearing in the photo. It was on sale, and I always wanted one something like that.
Since I met Loren, I have been introduced to more activities that associate with nature. I really appreciate the opportunities he is creating for me.

Visiting REI was an interesting experience like seeing history how humans developed ways to play or/and deal with nature. I bet there was no windbreaker like I am wearing in the photo 100 years ago. It is nice that REI is helping us to stay connected with nature; at the same time, we cannot forget nature is still nature. No matter how much we improve our tools, we never conquer nature.

---------------------------(Japanese)------------------------------
(People can practice rock climbing inside of the building. Even a small child was trying.)

(3) 8/30 Morning 2

Wednesday, 8/30

After the breakfast, we went to Pike Place Market in Seattle. (You can visit their neat web-site; you can take a virtual tour by clicking, "EXPERIENCE THE MARKET" left lower corner.)
We went there last year. We wanted to go back there because we had the best peaches we had ever had there. They were so juicy!

We also visited Pike Place Fish Company, one of many stores in the market. They are not just a fish store; they are an inspirational fish market. How? You will find out after you read their book, " Catch! A Fishmonger's Guide to Greatness." The book is about "unusual combination of oral biography and business blueprint. Using our examples, and letting us explain our work lives and our personal lives, the book explores the issues of goals; both financial and humanitarian; and intention, showing how we create our goals in collaboration with management to everyone's satisfaction." (http://www.pikeplacefish.com/store/item.aspx?pf_id=180) Loren bought the book last year and was motivated to bring in some of their philosophical ideas into his own business.

We got plums (photo below, like marbles), peaches, pumpkin peaches (flat peaches), raspberries, dried strawberries, dried mango, trial mix, and so on.

Loren really liked the liveliness energy of the market in the early morning. Everyone looked happy and full of vitality. Every thing sold there looked fresh and shinning.

I saw two people playing at a corner of the market. They were called Coyote Grace, and I really liked the voice of the lady.

The market was like a source of people's lives in Seattle.

(2) 8/30 Morning

At 5:45 am, I was at Seattle Airport. I saw an interesting decoration at the baggage area. Old suitcases were skewered and were rolling in the air. I was watching it for a while. Too attracted to its odd decoration, it took me awhile to notice that I was at a wrong baggage area. I moved down to the next area and found my baggage.
I called Loren's cell, and it connected to his voice message right away. I hunch something bad...

Seattle was cold! I waited Loren to pick me up outside of a building. He got in Seattle about 7 hours ahead of me. He was supposed to pick up our rental car and sleep in it.

I waited 15 minutes. "I am cold!"

I waited another 15 minutes. "I wanna go inside... but what if he drives in?"

I waited another 15 minutes...! I began to worry. I kept calling his cell phone, but he did not answer.

Finally, he called me. As soon as I heard his voice, I was happy and was not even mad at him. "Loooooren! :)" He told me that he adjusted his watch only two hours ahead instead of three hours. He even thought that he was a little early to pick me up when he was driving to the airport. That's why I waited for an hour. It makes sense!

I was glad that he was not in a trouble.

(He turned off his cell phone while he was sleeping in order to reserve the battery, so that he could call me when he picked me up.)

We went to eat breakfast since I was very hungry, and he told me beautiful stories from the visit to Milwaukee for the funeral.

(Oh, by the way, we found his cell phone charger later.)

-----------------------------(Japanese)------------------------

Washington Trip (1)

I am back on Maui!
I had a meaningful trip in Washington. I am going to write about what I did there...

--------------------------------------
Tuesday, 8/29

I did homework.
I cleaned the house.
I did laundry.
I organized Grandma's caregiver schedule and made a handbook.
I talked to each caregiver what to do at night and at certain situations.
I did errands.
I checked all the bills.
Everything should be fine for the next several days...

Grandma looked stable when I left which gave ease to my concerned mind.

Loren's friend, Chris, took me to the airport. Thanks, Chris.

The last time I talked to Loren, he said that his cell phone would die soon, and he could not find the battery charger... I hoped that I can talk to him when I arrive at Seattle Airport.

The plane left at 7:35 pm. I studied for the State of Hawaii Massage Therapist Licensing Exam in the plane. I will have the exam a day after I return to Maui, so I better get ready for it.

I listened to Dave Matthews Band's CD with my portable CD player (I don't have an iPod or similar electronic device yet...). I finally understood the lyric of "Satellite." I really like the song now.

I could not sleep in the plane. Maybe I was too excited for the trip or to see Loren.
I slept about an hour.

[Photo: I took this one from the window seat. It's a part of the plane, but I don't know what to call it. It was whitely standing out in the black sky.]

やっと「Satellite(サテライト)」という曲の歌詞を理解できたような。
